Jamie Coots was a Pentacostalist preacher who practiced snake handling. The style of worship is illegal in many states. Practiced often in private in the Appalachians since the early 1900s, snake handling gained notoriety through the National Geographic Channel show Snake Salvation.
Coots died on Saturday after being bitten by one of the poisonous snakes he used in his services.
