Still Very, 25 Years Later: The Bleak Genius of Heathers

The cult of Heathers, the 1988 black comedy about two high school students who unintentionally make suicide popular, has grown so much in 25 years that it’s now gotten that ultimate niche-classic coronation: adaptation as a Broadway musical. Early notices for the stage production, which opens Monday—the anniversary of the film’s release in the U.S., where it flopped—says it “aims to strike a more hopeful, optimistic tone by the end” than the movie did.

To which any diehard Heathers fan might answer something like, “fuck me gently with a chainsaw.”

Optimism, see, has no place in Heathers’ appeal. The film is often mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Mean Girls and Clueless due to its subject matter and snappy dialogue, but Heathers features a dark streak unmatched by its descendants. Seen today, it deserves to be celebrated as an early, scathing critique of a culture that celebrates mediocrity and is indifferent to suffering.

You know what else ruins people’s lives?

B e i n g r a p e d

I know of several stories where administrators and faculty protected the perpetrator of disturbing and horrible behavior in the name of “not ruining someone’s life.”

Luckily, one of those in question, met with an “unfortunate accident” and somehow “fell down the stairs” and broke his legs.

Archaeologists Delicately Dig Up Nazi Death Camp Secrets at Treblinka

Archaeologists Delicately Dig Up Nazi Death Camp Secrets at Treblinka:
Archaeologists have unearthed unprecedented physical evidence documenting the extent of the killing at the Nazis’ Treblinka death camp in Poland — and they let filmmakers document the finds as well.

The grisly results are revealed in "Treblinka: Hitler’s Killing Machine," an hour-long show premiering Saturday on the Smithsonian Channel. But they’re revealed in a way that pays respect to the estimated 900,000 Jewish victims of that killing machine.

historywars:

Lithuanian man after killing a few Jews with the bar you see in the picture. The pogroms in the Baltic countries were common

Not just a few Jews were killed that day.

—-

"I was confronted by the following scene: in the left corner of the yard there was a group of men aged between thirty and fifty. There must have been forty to fifty of them. They were herded together and kept under guard by some civilians. The civilians were armed with rifles and wore armbands, as can be seen in the pictures I took. A young man – he must have been a Lithuanian – with rolled-up sleeves was armed with an iron crowbar.

He dragged out one man at a time from the group and struck him with the crowbar with one or more blows on the back of his head. Within three quarters of an hour he had beaten to death the entire group of forty-five to fifty people in this way. I took a series of photographs of the victims.

After the entire group had been beaten to death, the young man put the crowbar to one side, fetched an accordion and went and stood on the mountain of corpses and played the Lithuanian national anthem. I recognised the tune and was informed by bystanders that this was the national anthem.

The behaviour of the civilians present (women and children) was unbelievable. After each man had been killed they began to clap and when the national anthem started up they joined in singing and clapping.”

Amateur footage shows the moment Joanne Milne, who has been deaf since birth and is now 40 years old, hears for the first time.

Joanne has a rare medical condition called Usher syndrome, and as a result also began to lose her vision in her 20s. She was fitted with cochlear implants at a hospital in Birmingham in February, and is visibly overcome with emotion when hearing a nurse read the days of the week. Watch
