Here, at Gardelegen Concentration Camp, the guards panicked as Allied forces drew closer. In an effort to stop the prisoners from escaping or being liberated by the advancing Americans the guards locked a majority of them inside the warehouses and burned them alive. By the time the US Army arrived to the camp, the warehouse was smoking and the majority of prisoners dead.
