Its faith-based 12-step program dominates treatment in the United States. But researchers have debunked central tenets of AA doctrine and found dozens of other treatments more effective.“Why do we assume they failed the program, rather than that the program failed them?“
Un articolo bello e importante, da molti punti di vista.
I know a LOT of people in AA. I’ve been around enough to know that it works. I appreciate articles like this but I believe that the article is misguided and shortsighted.
Is there a better way than AA? I don’t know. I’m not an alcoholic. I do know many, many people who it has worked for and will continue to work for.
There is a far deeper meaning to the words and camaraderie of AA than any scientific study can even attempt to recreate. Is it for everyone? Probably not. Does it work for many? Yes it does. Does it claim to be based in science? No it does not.
Are there and will there be alternatives to AA? Certainly. But for those AA does work for, let it work.
Unless you yourself are the one with the problem, the one desperate for help, the powerless one, how about you clean up your side of the street before you go cleaning up anyone else’s.
