The last time I checked it was the 21st century.
I’ve been seeing more and more television with gay couples. That’s awesome. I love that and I think that it has a lot to do with the shifting feelings about gay rights and shows that gay people aren’t aliens or perverts, they’re just normal people.
But, why can’t we have major leading characters who are something other than handsome white males or gorgeous white females?
Sure there are shows out there with non white leading characters, but Jesus H. muhfuggin’ Christ if you watch television, the overwhelming majority of shows are like taking a trip to Honkyville.
Something else that MAKES ME FUCKING INSANE is if you have a love interest on a show, they are by and large with a person of the SAME RACE. You could have one lone actor of color in the scene and a stadium of 50,000 possible love interests and what happens? When the big dance party breaks out and everyone is milling around and dancing, slow clapping, TV laughing, and coupling off, somehow, against all odds… he *SURPRISE* picks out THE ONLY OTHER BLACK PERSON IN THE CROWD. …the only one…
50,000 people in the room and he’ll manage to somehow ignore the 49,999 other people and will gravitate to the ONLY OTHER PERSON who has the same color skin as he does.
Why does this matter?! Why is this still a “thing”?! On TV you have shows where DNA results happen as fast as getting money from an ATM, handsome people travel in space, and people can somehow afford to live in 2500 square foot apartments in NYC on their earnings from the tip jar at the local coffee shop.
If we’re willing to suspend the boundaries of reality for shit like that, why the fuck can’t we allow interracial couples? Something that ACTUALLY EXISTS?
