This is one of my oldest friends. I’ve known him for 31 years.

The last time I saw him he was working at an art supply store.

The time before that he had just moved back from Australia.

The time before that he was engaged and working for his father.

The time before that my sophomore year at college.

Then before college we were in high school together. Before my junior year of high school we were pretty much inseparable. But we drifted apart.

We tried over the years to keep in touch as indicated above. But he kept disappearing. Like off the grid… disappearing. After the last time I thought he was gone forever. I was just recently walking the dogs and hoping one day he’d pop back into my life somehow. Just so I knew he was ok. That he was alive and well. But I thought this time he was gone. It had been the longest time yet, five years.

Then today, through the power of Facebook, I saw his goofy smiling face again.

This made my day. Even my week. Maybe even my month. I’m so glad he’s out there and doing well. I’m also relieved to know he’s someplace, even if it is a world away in Afghanistan.

So, here’s to Mr. Stough! Send him some good thoughts.
