Regarding eating alone, as if I needed any more time alone during my brief residency in Portland, I used to love going to a long since closed restaurant called Magpie Cafe which was at NE Fremont and 14th just around the corner from what used to be a Nature’s grocery store and is now a Whole Foods.
They had the best French toast. Eating there alone, unlike so much of the other time I spent alone in that town, felt like home. It was quiet and never crowded. You could stay there for hours and just be alone.
