atheistrepublicquotes:

Still waiting…

Sure, yes, of course, but it isn’t just Islam. It’s all of us. It’s all religions, political organization, PTAs, Cub Scout Troops, company softball teams, three legged race pairs, it’s all of us. Eastern western, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, whatever. It’s all of us. We’re all responsible for this.

We should all be absolutely fucking outraged that shit like that takes place ANYWHERE no matter what. Regardless of what “religion” or group of people, we should be outraged to the Nth degree NO MATTER WHAT. It doesn’t matter if it’s acid or rape, murder or catcalls.

We’re too busy pointing fingers and saying things like this about other cultures… as if we don’t bear any responsibility, as if the burden is someone else’s. Therefore, in our ‘more civilized’ culture, we can sit back and make those types of comparisons and think of the perpetrators as somehow less evolved, less modern, less cultured. Meanwhile we treat rape as a joke, sexism as the norm, and give the people that take part in these more ‘civilized’ behaviors a pass and blame the victim for their assault, their abuse, their ridicule and mockery.

So, to the person who created this, I get it, I understand your point, but let’s not point any goddamn fingers at anyone else until we clean up OUR side of the fucking street here in our ‘modern civilization’. Let’s get our ducks in a row and prove to the world that women are actually people. Let’s get off of our collective ass and point the finger at OURSELVES. Let’s start making real and significant changes instead of pretending like other people are somehow MORE horrible than we are. That their culture is MORE backward and fucked up than ours.

Judging another culture with a blanket statement about how they don’t get more outraged about acid attacks isn’t fixing anything. It’s the laziest form of critique. It’s half assed, and banal, bordering on racist.

We preach platitudes about everyone else while here at home, day in and day out, we bully victims, remove reproductive rights, shame people because of how they appear, we allow people to run rampant, unchecked, to catcall, quip and riff about rape and assault giving them an easy pass. Instead we should be nailing their ass to the fucking wall, calling them on their shit no matter if they’re the boys at the local Sig Ep chapter or a judge. A cop or the kid across the street.

We need to clean up our yard to not only set an example but to also be better at treating people like humans before we go off about how someone else is somehow WORSE than us or their theology more fucked up than any of ours.
