Gojira (1954)
The first time I watched the original Gojira, I was stunned to learn that it isn’t funny. There’s a profound helplessness running throughout the film — a man strikes up a conversation with a girl on a streetcar about the nightly attacks on Tokyo, and she sadly smiles that she moved to Tokyo to start a new life, and now they have this. He asks where she came from. Hiroshima, she says. Ah. Neither of them say anything.
Ugh.
Apparently these types of films where some hideous radioactive monster destroys Tokyo are NOT meant to be dumb or kitschy flicks about killer lizards that breathe fire.
Turns out that America misinterpreted the meaning and nuance and thought this shit was hilarious, like mixed up zombies and CHUD babies.
