I love the filthy, unlicensed, off-brand characters hustling Times Square. It’s just perverse that 20 years ago, the neighborhood transitioned from squalor to Disney, only to see Disney eat itself in an IP-violating sunlit apocalypse of smiles.
But really Disney is just that one baby step away from street hustler.
Where there is cheap easy money to squeeze out cash from some fat faced mark on the street, you’ll find some version of Disney. Counterfeit or real.
The great thing, the thing that they are amazing at is that they’re not even trying to hide it.
Where once sat a man hustling passers by in a shell game now stands a man in an Elmo suit doing exactly the same thing, but without the shells.
Of course the stabbing/mugging percentages are way down comparatively.
