- Linguistics researchers explore the gender gap in our vocabulary. For a pause-giving counterpart, see Leonard Shlain on how the invention of the alphabet usurped female power in society. (via 123katemarie)

Shlain’s book is awesome and provoking. Read and reread: he maps the “relationship between literacy and patriarchy. Without denying the vastness of the benefits literacy bestowed upon humanity, Shlain uses Marshall McLuhan’s famous dictum — “the medium is the message” — to examine how the advent of the written word and our ability to read reconfigured the human brain, effecting profound changes in the cultural dynamics of gender roles.” Then read again.

I know all of these things. Where do I land?

In a meeting today with 3 females and another guy...

dewster:

An older female manager was talking about how she isn’t up on all the lingo of the younger set and that she had to sometimes ask her daughter about things. Then she proceeded to inform us that she asked her daughter if there was another meaning for a “pearl necklace.”

I literally picked up my laptop and then closed it around my head.

This is about our health and our lives. This is about our fundamental right to have control over our own bodies. This is about justice — and we’re fighting back. If you agree, join Justice Ginsburg’s dissent.

Beat Communism!

(Well, beat that Swedish actor at least!)

Dolph and Brigitte? I thought one was just the other in drag so they couldn’t be in the same place at the same time. Turns out I was wrong. Apparently, I need to give this movie a closer, more attentive viewing. In fact, I’m fairly sure I have this on DVD. I suppose I was to distracted by the glistening muscles and the training montages.
