Ice cave on the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. It was formed by a stream flowing from the hot springs associated with the Mutnovsky volcano. This stream flows beneath glacial ice on the flanks of Mutnovsky. Because glaciers on Kamchatka volcanoes have been melting in recent years, the roof of this cave is now so thin that sunlight penetrates through it, eerily illuminating the icy structures within.

Pretty medieval manuscript of the day is a fifteenth century map of England, Wales and Scotland. Confusingly, Scotland is at the bottom. Can you spot the cathedral city of St Andrews? And look, there’s Canterbury at the top. Can you see Ely, surrounded by water? What a beautiful book.

But seriously, at the time I thought it was piece called “Victimas del Pescado” which due to the language barrier and my previous gig at The Salty Sailor led to a lot of flopping and flailing around and making fish faces, for obvious reasons.
But I see now it was actually called “Victimas del Pecado” which makes more sense.
Nonetheless, I think my performance holds up either way.

Who still buys CD’s? I do. One of the greatest things on earth is popping in a cd, one lone album, and listening to it while doing NOTHING ELSE. No option to listen to anything else. Just one single disc. No shuffle, no playlist.
I don’t want the mp3, I don’t want it on my iTunes or spotify. I just want to listen to it and learn it. Without distraction. I used to do it all the time but somewhere along the line I got too busy navigating the endless folders of music and constant, pervasive, limitless and incredibly irritating iTunes updates. iPod to iPod. iPhone to iPhone. Somewhere in there music became a hassle, which it shouldn’t be. It should be easy and not involve a computer I spend all day with a computer. Why should I do it at home?
Recently, like the old days, I’ve started dropping in the cd, plopping down in an uncomfortable chair and sitting directly in front of the stereo to rock out these sweet-ass jams.
After that, I’ll put it on the iPod.

When Charlie left Vietnam in May 1969, he managed to hustle his negatives home to the States with him (but that is another story for a future blog post).
Some negatives, however, never made it.
Along the way during Charlie’s 13 months in country, some negatives were lost. Some were sent to magazines for print, only to be never returned. And some negatives, we just don’t know the fate of.
Within the boxes and boxes of Vietnam leftovers Charlie has at his house here in Portland are stacks of contact prints, like these two. Where are the negatives for these shots? It’s impossible to say, but we certainly hope they turn up some day
